Pronunciation Guide
There is no standardization for transliterating Amharic, or putting it into Roman
characters. This is why words can be spelled all different ways when converted to
Roman characters.
For example, we see Addis Ababa or other times Addis Abeba. The words on this website
and in the "Our First Amharic Words" book have been transliterated using the vowels
(u), (oo), (ee), (a), (ay), (i), and (o). Familiarize yourself with how the vowels
are used below.

u as in gut, bud
oo as in shoot, choose
ee as in free, tea
a as in sad, mat
ay as in cake, safe, hay
i as in evil, dish
o as in go, show
